Sports Massage is Painful.
If delivered correctly then sports massage should not be painful. It should not leave you feeling like you want to jump off the table because you are in so much discomfort.
Sports massage does not need to be painful or heavy-handed to be effective! When sports massage is delivered correctly some clients describe the sensation as "therapeutic discomfort"- whereby the massage is relieving muscle tension but it is not painful. There are only a few techniques which are uncomfortable and these are used for a specific purpose only- to remodel scar tissue after an injury.
Sports Massage is Only for People Who are Sporty.
This is not the case! In fact, the majority of the people that come to see me for a sports massage are suffering with muscular tension usually caused by day-to-day activities; for example working at an office desk, driving, or physical work that they have done e.g. moving house, physical labour (builder, nursing, child minding, gardening).
Although sports massage often works into the deepest layers of the muscles it is excellent for relaxation- to prepare for a holiday or to wind down from a busy week at work. But- as the name suggests, it is the best type of massage for people who are sporty and who want to keep their muscular system in tip-top condition to prevent injury, reduce muscular tension and to improve physical performance.
